PSHE/RSE Consultation
The Department for Education has updated its statutory guidance for Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education. The revised guidance came into effect on 1 September 2026 and sets out the knowledge and understanding pupils should develop during their time at primary school.
At Park End Primary School, we recognise that parents and carers are the prime educators for their children in many areas of relationships, health and personal development. Our role is to complement and reinforce learning at home, providing children with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to live happy, healthy and safe lives and develop positive, respectful relationships.
We use the Jigsaw PSHE scheme of work, which provides a carefully sequenced programme from Reception to Year 6. Learning is revisited and developed as children progress through school, building knowledge, vocabulary, skills and understanding.
Our six Jigsaw themes are:
- Autumn 1 – Being Me in My World
- Autumn 2 – Celebrating Difference
- Spring 1 – Dreams and Goals
- Spring 2 – Healthy Me
- Summer 1 – Relationships
- Summer 2 – Changing Me
Through our PSHE curriculum, pupils learn about:
- developing healthy and respectful relationships;
- understanding and managing emotions;
- physical and mental health and wellbeing;
- keeping themselves safe, including online;
- respect, equality and differences;
- resilience, confidence and self-esteem; and
- growing and changing.
It is important to distinguish between Relationships Education, Health Education and Sex Education.
- Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory in primary schools.
- The National Curriculum for Science includes statutory teaching about the human body, growth and reproduction.
- Schools may also provide additional, age-appropriate Sex Education beyond the statutory Science curriculum. Where this is taught at Park End, parents and carers have the right to withdraw their child from this additional Sex Education.
We are committed to delivering this learning in a way that is age-appropriate, inclusive, sensitive and responsive to the needs of our pupils.
We would like to give parents and carers the opportunity to view our curriculum and provide feedback.
Below you will find our curriculum overview, examples of lesson materials and the DfE statutory expectations.
Thank you for taking the time to engage with our consultation. We value your views and look forward to working together to support our pupils to become happy, healthy, safe, confident and respectful young people.
