During the spring term, we will be transported to the 1500s when the terrible Tudors reigned. From Henry VIII to Elizabeth I, the children will uncover the truths of the menacing monarchy that ruled throughout the Tudor period. The children will be investigating and interpreting why and how the Church of England was created, and how this influences life today. Through the use of research, note-taking, presentations, and understanding of chronology, the pupils will also explore the Roman Empire and their lasting legacies.
Throughout the spring term, Year 5 will be exploring and discovering areas of the world. They will do so, through the eyes of a refugee child. Focusing on the book, ‘Sami’s Silver Lining’, tasks and activities will immerse the children into the life of a refugee and the daily struggles which they face.
The geographical focus will be on discovering the rainforests of the world and investigating North America. The children will be developing their place knowledge and will be describing how locations around the world are changing and explain some of the reasons for change.
Living things and animals including humans will be the focus in science. The children will be developing their knowledge and understanding of biology through these topics. The children will be using scientific diagrams and recording explanations in a variety of ways. Through this approach, they will be learning about the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird.
In maths, the children will be building upon their knowledge of the times tables and they will continuing with daily rehearsal of the written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children will be continuing with Power Maths.
Musical talents. The children will be developing their singing skills through the participation in a singing group led by a music specialist. All children will have the opportunity to sing and learn a musical instrument. In addition to this, the children will be following a music scheme adopted by the school: Charanga.
To promote healthy lifestyles, the children will be participating in a range of physical education. They will be developing their basketball, orienteering, cross-country and gymnastic skills throughout the spring term. There will also be opportunities to participate in school competitions.
As part of our commitment to developing pupils’ personal, social, health and economic knowledge and skills, the children will be learning about their rights and responsibilities as a citizen both in school and as part of the wider world. The children will be exploring dreams and goals and the ‘Healthy Me’ aspects of our PSHE scheme.
Worship will be the focus of RE lessons. The children will be exploring religious worship and they will gain the skills needed to engage with religion. The children will be looking at Jewish, Christian and Hindu places of worship.
Inspirational artists, past and present, will inspire the children to develop their collage and printing skills. The children will be exploring the use of materials for collage and combining visual and tactile qualities. In printing, the children will build up layers of colours and create accurate patterns, showing some fine detail.
